Castle of Stein
The castle of Stein - built on a rock high above the valley between Dellach and Irschen - dates back to the 12th century.
The imposing Romanesque castle complex “Schloss Stein”, which dates back to the 12th century, is located on a steeply rising rock about 200 m above the valley floor on the south side of the Drau between Dellach and Irschen.
The keep, separated from the palace and originally connected to it by a wooden bridge, is now partially dilapidated and serves as a lookout tower.
The double chapel in the north-east corner is a special art-historical feature. Two Romanesque chapels from the 15th century are arranged one above the other and connected by an opening in the ceiling. Both chapels, one of which is dedicated to St. Valentine and one to St. Martin, contain remarkable carved statues and vault paintings by the South Tyrolean artist Simon von Taisten. The castle complex is owned by the Orsini-Rosenberg family.
